245 A PILOT STUDY EVALUATING USE AND ACCEPTABILITY OF A NATIONAL AUDIT TOOL AND MANUAL FOR PSYCHOTROPIC MEDICATIONS IN RESIDENTIAL CARE

Abstract Background Psychotropic medications are frequently prescribed for long-term care residents, even though the risks outweigh benefits. A draft tool was developed self-audit of appropriateness psychotropic non-cognitive symptoms people with dementia in Residential-Care Facilities (RCF). Prior to national use, audit tool, manual and training required piloting. Methods The case notes ten residents were selected at random within a single RCF. set audited by professional staff after online (pre-recorded) training, subsequent feedback auditors on process via focus groups/individual interviews. second then audited, brief survey. Results All (7 nurses, 4 doctors, therapists) gave group(n=4) or 1:1 interviews; 7 also completed second-round pre-audit welcomed but some additional support during audit, especially if inexperienced there gap between performance. Improvement suggestions included shortening it; adding glossary terms, information decisions “as needed” (PRN) medications. Auditors reported difficulties reading handwriting, locating chart, determining medication newly previously occasion (due inconsistencies prescribing documentation). Conclusion Overall, positive; all that relevant their practice, useful. Future audits could be facilitated electronic prescriptions, protected time complete audits, site leads (senior nursing medical who familiar topic, performing audit). Inexperienced should have, addition session, supported auditing session.
